“A Doula meets a woman where she is and takes her to where she wants to go” -Phyllis Klaus

What is a Doula

The word Doula comes from the ancient Greek meaning "woman servant". In its contemporary meaning it refers to a professional labor companion who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to single mothers, and mothers with birth partners.

Benefits of Having a Doula:

  • Allows clients to make more informed choices;
  • Results in shorter, easier labors;
  • Reduces or eliminates the need for drugs/medical interventions, i.e. Pitocin, IVs, epidurals, forceps;
  • Decreases the incidence of complications, including Cesarean Sections;
  • Provides for a healthier and more alert mother and baby;
  • Brings a greater calm and confidence to the birthing process;
  • Enhances early mother-infant bonding and breastfeeding.

Statistics

  • 60% reduction in use of Epidurals
  • 50% reduction in Cesarean Births
  • 40% reduction in oxytocin (pitocin)
  • 40% reduction in forceps delivery
  • 25% reduction in labor time

As a Doula I:

  • Honor the birthing process;
  • Arrange for a complimentary initial get-acquainted meeting;
  • Am available 24 hours by phone during pregnancy;.
  • Work with the mother/couple to develop a Birthing Plan that is right for her/them;
  • Offer informational support so that the mother/couple can make informed choices;
  • Facilitate communication between the medical staff and the mother/couple, always protecting mother's/couple's wishes;
  • Bring the expertise of the physiology of labor and delivery;
  • Offer physical comfort and techniques to expedite labor, lessen or eliminate need for drugs, and if necessary assist in changing the fetal position by adjusting the mother's body position;
  • Provide continuous emotional/physical support throughout the labor and birth;
  • Help to create a positive birth experience, ever aware that the memory of the birthing experience will be life-long;

    As a Doula I do not:

  • Offer medical support or advice;
  • Perform clinical tasks;
  • Make decisions or persuade clients regarding any action to be taken;
  • Replace the role of a birth partner. My presence frees the partner to interact more closely with the mother, and to do what he/she does best -- to love her.
